The facility was hosting Ukrainian refugees fleeing their homes and had ‘children’ posted outside to prevent attacks by the Russians. The number of victims is not yet known
MARIUPOL. On the 22nd day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian armed forces hold their positions around major cities, including Kiev. But according to British intelligence, the invasion “has largely stalled on all fronts” and “Russian forces have made minimal progress on the ground, in the sea and in airspace in recent days, continuing to suffer heavy losses.”
Meanwhile, in the port city of Mariupol, rescuers – a councilor of the mayor of the city announced – have begun to extract the first survivors, so far 130 people, from the rubble of the theater bombed yesterday. But it is not clear how many people survived the structure, the Drama Theater, which in the previous days had been used as a refuge by a thousand people.
Satellite images before the bombing showed that the word “children” was written in Russian in large white letters in front of and behind the theater.
The efforts of the rescuers are hampered by the continuous bombings and the images relaunched by the social media show that the theater has been largely destroyed. The Russian government has denied carrying out the attack, calling the allegations “a lie”.
