In many places, the citizens of Ukraine are resisting the Russian attackers. A particularly impressive video comes from the city of Melitopol.
Melitopol – The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for over a week now and in many parts of the country Ukrainian troops are continuing to resist the Russian invaders. In many places, alongside the Ukrainian military, civilians are also taking up arms to defend their hometowns and villages against the attackers in the Ukraine conflict. In Kyiv alone, more than 25,000 weapons have been handed out to the population since the attack began.
But resistance can also be offered without weapons, as illustrated by a group of Ukrainian citizens in the city of Melitopol in the south-east of the country. A video from the city with over 150,000 inhabitants is circulating on social networks, where it has already been shared many times.
Ukraine conflict: Video – Russian soldiers retreat from unarmed citizens
The video shows a group of unarmed citizens confronting Russian soldiers in the city. The people with Ukrainian flags purposefully approach the heavily armed Russian forces and loudly demand them to leave. The Russian soldiers first backed away from the crowd and then tried to stop them with warning shots in the air. But even the shots didn’t stop the civilians, some of whom continued on their way with their hands raised. At the end of the 18 second video, the Russian soldiers are still in reverse while the unarmed citizens are stepping forward.
Ukraine conflict: Russian troops in Melitopol – various videos from the Ukrainian resistance
It’s not the first video of this kind from Melitopol. Videos were already circulating on the Internet during the week, which were supposed to show a peaceful protest march by citizens through the city. Another video shows an elderly man verbally confronting two Russian soldiers and telling them to leave, saying, “Are you still tight, brothers?”
Melitopol has been under Russian control for a week. On Saturday afternoon, after a brief pause in fire, Russian troops continued their attacks on the hard-fought city of Mariupol, about 150 kilometers away. Since the situation in the contested areas is extremely confusing, it is difficult to independently verify the authenticity of such videos. (fd)
