UGT and CCOO have demanded approval “in response to the tragedy caused by DANA”urgent” of a Royal Decree Law that implements the application of ERTES due to force majeure, that allows teleworking and that avoids the termination of temporary contracts.
This was stated this Sunday in a statement in which they reiterated their deep “dismay” at the devastating tragedy caused by the intense rains and floods that have devastated different areas of the country.
The unions highlight that the labor repercussions and the living conditions of the working population are “evident”, which is why they demand the reactivation of the social shield, about which they point out that It was effective during the pandemic, since it is “essential” and they point out that the Royal Decree must contemplate the application of ERTES, without consumption of unemployment benefits, to protect employment and allow a gradual recovery of companies.
Likewise, they ask for “extraordinary” unemployment protection for salaried and self-employed workers who cannot resume their activities due to the catastrophe; prevent extinction of contemporary contracts and protect those who have discontinuous permanent contracts; and allow teleworking to avoid the risks of unsafe travel to work while infrastructure is restored.
They also highlight that a program similar to Mecuida must be created, which allows the adaptation or reduction of working hours to meet family and care needs in these circumstances. Besides, They demand the immediate reinforcement of staff in health services, social, employment and Social Security, so that they can adequately address the foreseeable increase in requests and actions in each of them.
“We reiterate our pain for the loss of human life, which reaches unbearable levels, and our greatest solidarity and concern for the damage caused to homes, infrastructure and equipment. This catastrophe has hit hard in areas where the majority of the working population lives and works, who are facing moments of extreme hardship,” the unions comment.
In this sense, the unions urge all public institutions to mobilize all the necessary resources for rescue and emergency tasks. “It is urgent to restore access to food, water, energy and basic services, and respond to the socio-labor and economic impact suffered by all affected areas. The situation is critical, with many people still missing, and the immediate priority must be to locate and recover bodies that remain trapped in cars, basements and even homes,” they claim.
The unions demand that aid be activated with “administrative speed and agility” because it is essential at this time to cover personal injuries, housing and basic necessities. In turn, remember that it is essential to address the loss of income of many affected people and they propose that public benefits be complemented to minimize the economic impact of this situation, along with moratoriums and readjustments in the payment of mortgage debt that many families face.
Finally, they add that they are going to demand responsibilities for the decisions taken, and for those not taken in time, and the consequences they have had for the lives of a still undetermined number of working people, and they regret that the “irresponsibility and negligence” the working and popular classes pay.
“Disasters linked to the climate emergency require structural public policies, not cuts in public resources or reactionary denialism. Scientific analysis and prediction cannot be postponed due to ideological fanaticism,” they say.
