Yesterday, the UAE affirmed its rejection and explicit condemnation of the use of chemical weapons under any circumstances, by anyone and anywhere, stressing that their use constitutes a flagrant violation of the provisions of the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and international law.
And she stressed, in a statement, during a meeting of the Security Council on the chemical file in Syria, made by Saud Al-Mazrouei, the acting political coordinator in the country’s delegation to the United Nations, the need to address the gaps and outstanding issues between the Syrian authorities and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
Al-Mazrouei said, according to the statement: “I would like to remind everyone that the supreme goal of the Syrian chemical file lies in addressing the gaps and outstanding issues between the Syrian authorities and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and this goal should remain the compass guiding our discussions.”
The UAE, according to Al Mazrouei, expressed its regret that no agreement was reached between the two parties on the Syrian announcement team’s visit to Syria or on holding limited consultations in Beirut, adding: “While we understand the concerns of the concerned authorities about the arrangements necessary to conduct this visit, the participation of an expert should not be a specific reason for not holding the consultations.”
We also understand that every organization has people with long-term experience, and it is difficult to abandon them when performing certain tasks, but this does not mean that it is impossible to complete these tasks without the presence of these people, as ensuring the continuity of work should be the paramount goal.
She stated, “We regret that correspondence between the two parties is satisfied, instead of conducting a visit and engaging in constructive discussions between them, and therefore we look forward to holding the upcoming meeting between the Syrian Foreign Minister and the Director-General of the organization.”
At the conclusion of the statement, the UAE stressed the need to achieve tangible progress in the chemical file, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2118, and we will continue to work to support the Council’s efforts to achieve these goals, as we also look forward to a meaningful dialogue on the Council’s meetings on this file.
