On the UAE presidency of the Security Council since the beginning of March, Her Excellency Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Political Affairs, Permanent Representative of the country to the United Nations, said: “The UAE believes that diplomacy and dialogue are necessary to confront urgent global challenges, as we have strengthened the Those principles throughout our presidency of the Council.”
Her Excellency added: “The UAE has welcomed the renewal of important mandates for peacekeeping missions, and we are pleased that it has reflected the existing security challenges around the world, which coincided with our presidency.”
During the presidency of the UAE, the Security Council renewed the mandates of peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and South Sudan, and the mandate of the Expert Group on Supporting the 1718 Committee, regarding the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
The Council also supported the decision of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, regarding the reconfiguration of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to become the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia.
In a related context, the Security Council issued press statements, in which it expressed its deep concern about what was announced regarding the Taliban’s decision to deprive girls of the sixth grade and above of education. The Council also condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks in Somalia and Pakistan, and the attack on the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali. The State of Kuwait congratulated the UAE on its successful and distinguished presidency of the UN Security Council last March.
