Two Spanish political prisoners, whose identity remains anonymous, were conditionally released this Saturday before the courts, confirmed the Spanish Consulate in Caracas, following the announcement made by Attorney General Tarek William Saab to review 225 cases of detainees after the elections on July 28.
The Spanish Consulate told ABC that “the two Spanish political prisoners are released under very peculiar conditions, with a regime of periodic appearance before the judge and with the promise not to make statements.”
These two Spaniards are part of the first group of 10 released politicians who benefit from the conditional release measure of the Chavista government after the national and international commotion that occurred with the death from diabetes of the electoral table witness Jesús Manuel Martínez Medina, which occurred this Thursday.
The first seven released were identified as Gustavo Albarran, Luis Ocando, Rafael Murillo, Luis Batista, David Sanoja, Carbelis Torres, as published on his X account by the former president of the National College of Journalists (CNP) William Echeverría.
The release of the first political prisoners took place at 4:30 in the morning this Saturday in various penitentiary centers such as Yare (Miranda), Tocorón (Aragua) and the women’s prison in Las Crisálidas (Los Teques, Miranda), according to confirmed by the NGO Foro Penal, Provea, the National College of Journalists and the Spanish Consulate (there are 24 Spaniards in prison).
The Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) also confirmed the release of women detained in the La Crisálida women’s prison, Miranda state, under precautionary measures, also from the Yare III center.
“Family members of the young people detained in the Tocorón de Aragua and the Tocuyito boarding school in Carabobo are in the vicinity of the prisons awaiting release,” adds the prison NGO.
Case review
The review of the files of the post-election detainees was quick because 24 hours earlier, this Friday, the Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, announced that his office requested before the courts to review 225 cases of the total number of detainees after the presidential elections of the 28th. July – estimated at 2,400 people by the Maduro Government, without specifying whether these are possible releases.
“225 reviews of measures have been requested from those prosecuted for these events that shocked the country and left the unfortunate number of 28 people dead, nearly 200 injured and 500 public and private property destroyed,” he explained in a VTV broadcast.
He added that this decision was made “after exhaustive investigations based on new evidence and elements of evidence.” In the coming days the rest of those imprisoned will be released.
“This has family reunification as its center, it consolidates the commitment of Venezuelan institutions to peace, justice and human rights,” concludes the statement read by Saab. To justify himself, he said that the cases are “related to violent actions that occurred after the presidential elections,” which contradicts the statements of the detainees who deny the violence attributed to them.
The NGO Prison Observatory pointed out that “any release is a victory, but we demand full freedom because these people were arbitrarily detained, they were not committing any crime.”
