With almost 50 years of history, Tuxpan Flower Shops is currently a benchmark for commerce in Los Mochis, it has seven stores and are managed by the seven Mejía Moreno brothers.
History
Maria Zyrahi He said that his parents, Serapio Mejía Palomares and Ofelia Moreno Soto, came to The Mochis from Tuxpan, Michoacan, looking for a better future. And in 1975 they started the business, bringing the product from their homeland.
At first they drove alone gladiola and carnation, as distributors in the north of Sinaloa and southern Sonora. But the business was flourishing, and they began to bring pink, pompom, and many other varieties. And so they decided to establish themselves with a flower shop.
How many employees does each flower shop have now?
It depends on each business. Each of my brothers has their employees. But more or less, there are about 8 or 10 employees per company.
How many flower orders do you make per month?
Usually there are six orders, with different suppliers.
And it varies, there are months in which it can be up to ten.
How much do sales increase on a good day?
Yes it is impacted. For example, on Mother’s Day it increases 200% or 300%, the same on February 14. And the Day of the Dead, well it depends on the branch and the flower.
On one of those days a lot of flower is wasted, is there a margin of loss already contemplated?
It is about not having too much loss, but there are many factors that come into play.
Sometimes we think that we are going to do very well, and we keep the product. That product is already lost, that is, a new product has to be brought immediately.
If on February 14 I have, say, about 200 packages of roses left over, they are thrown into the trash. Because the life of the flower is not very long. So, yes it is a lot of risk, but you have to be careful.
How much does informal commerce hit you on a good day?
A lot. Sometimes we save 20%, but there have been times when we don’t.
These are dates when everyone looks for their opportunity, but not so much for informal commerce. What happens here is that there is a lot of unfair competition: sometimes the same people who sell us the flowers come to sell, and ethics is lost there.
The investment is a lot and everything goes to waste. There have been times when it has been disastrous, the loss.
How to survive in this competitive sector?
I see that this is how it has to be. In other words, we are evolving.
You have to work on marketing strategies, quality is very important, take care of customer service and provide good service. That marks your difference with others.
And the competition is good. We all have to look for our daily bread, and everyone will fight as they can. The sun shines for everyone.
Are bouquets still being sold?
Yes, there is still a lot of romance. I like it, I really like my job, I really like my company, I am in love with this, with the flower shop. I find it very nice to see a person come for a bouquet, a man come for a bouquet for his wife, a young man come for a bouquet for his girlfriend.
The market is good, I see it well. There are florists that provide services for events, that are dedicated to that and are very good at it. I do it too, but one hundred percent, I like to provide customer service more.
Where is Florerías Tuxpan aiming?
Well, to continue growing… and hopefully to the new generations.
