Basaksehir, who won the Turkish Super League title in 2020, announced the signing of former German international midfielder Mesut Ozil on a one-year contract.
“I am very happy,” Ozil, who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, said at his presentation ceremony.
Goksel Gumusdag, president of Basaksehir, said that the club offered Ozil to join its ranks for two years, but the German player preferred to join for one season, with the possibility of extending it for another season.
The contract with Basaksehir came one day after Fenerbahce announced the termination of Ozil’s contract by mutual consent between the two parties.
Ozil, 33, joined Fenerbahce last year from Arsenal, after he was excluded from the team in March.
Ozil said last month that he wanted to complete his contract with Fenerbahce, which was supposed to run until 2024.
Fenerbahce did not reveal the reasons for the termination of Ozil’s contract, but club president Ali Kok said last November that the German player should focus on football and not his business activities.
