Turkey | Erdoğan: Hamas leader will visit Turkey this weekend

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is a staunch supporter of Palestine and a harsh critic of Israel.

Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan says that he invited the leader of the extremist organization Hamas to Ismail Haniyeh for a visit.

“The leader of the Palestinian struggle will be my guest next weekend,” Erdoğan told the Turkish parliament on Wednesday, according to Reuters news agency.

Erdoğan is a staunch defender of Palestine. He strongly criticizes Israel and has called it a terrorist state.

“Even if I, Tayyip Erdoğan, are left, I will continue to support the Palestinian struggle and give my voice to the oppressed Palestinian people as long as God allows me to live,” Erdoğan said.

Last week, Erdoğan sent his condolences to Haniyeh, whose three sons and several grandchildren were killed in the Israeli strike. Haniyeh herself lives in Qatar.

Erdoğan did not reveal the location of the meeting, but the Turkish NTV channel reported that the meeting would be held at Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul. Haniyeh last met Erdoğan in July 2023 at the presidential palace in Ankara.

At the meeting likely to have no effect on ceasefire negotiations. Qatar, which is leading the negotiations, said on Wednesday that the negotiations had stalled.

According to Israeli statistics, 1,170 people died in the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel in October. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, at least 33,889 people, most of them women and children, have died in Israel's attack on Hamas-controlled Gaza.
