At least 30 people were injured on board an Air Europa plane flying from Madrid to Montevideo, Uruguay, after encountering severe turbulence early this morning. The plane, a Boeing 787-9, was forced to make an emergency landing in Natal, Brazil.
There were 325 passengers on board flight UX045. According to an Air Europa spokesperson, the turbulence occurred while it was flying over the Atlantic as it was about to reach the Brazilian coast. The plane landed normally and was met by a fleet of ambulances.

Airport officials said some passengers needed medical attention and were taken to the nearest hospital. A local medical team told Brazilian media that they had treated at least 30 passengers of different nationalities and that 10 of them were taken to the hospital.
The patients had hit their heads during the turbulence and suffered injuries including skull fractures and cuts to their faces, doctors added.
The crash comes just weeks after a Singapore Airlines flight hit severe turbulence in Myanmar, resulting in dozens of injuries and the death of a British national.
Severe turbulence is rare, but recent studies have shown that climate change could increase the risk.
