So many regrets
If the qualifications of the Canadian Grand Prix they ended at two o’clock Racing Bulls among the top ten, and especially with Daniel Ricciardo’s 5th place, the outcome of the race was a little more bitter for the Faenza team, with the only Australian reaching the points but not higher than eighth position. However, the possibility of finishing with a top-10 double was feasible, at least until Yuki Tsunoda’s late error.
Out of the points for a spin
The Japanese, 7th at the time (and previously one of the few drivers not to have replaced the intermediates after the first safety car), lost control of the car entering Turn 3, ending up spinning but without hitting the wall of protection, and with Hülkenberg narrowly avoiding collision. Having averted this double risk, Tsunoda managed to finish the race regularly, albeit in 14th position: “Today’s it was my mistake, a stupid move, I’m sorry for the team – commented Tsunoda, clearly disappointed and saddened by the episode – the team had definitely made the right decision on strategy and done a good job; it wasn’t easy with the old Intermediates, but I felt good. The decision to switch to dry tires was also made at the right time. At least I reversed course from free practice to qualifying and that’s positive, but today was disappointing and not the way I should have finished the race. I should have just taken her home.”
Immediately a penalty
Not an easy race for Ricciardo either, and this not only due to the changing weather conditions. In fact, the Australian had to serve 5 second penalty for false start: “It was a good weekend right from the start, considering all the conditions, and with a crazy race like this, I am happy to bring home some points – he has declared – I got a penalty for a jump start, but I was a little confused because I knew I hadn’t blown the light, but then I remembered that while leaving I felt that perhaps the car was moving. We had a small problem with the car and we will look into it, but obviously this had a negative impact on our race. When we made the pit stop to put on the Intermediates, we lost a few positions compared to the cars that remained outside and we weren’t able to make much more use of the new tyres. The race was getting out of hand, but when the track dried towards the end and we switched to medium tyres, I managed to make my way back into the top 10, which was a bit of a relief. I’m happy that it was a fairly quiet weekend for us and, obviously, for having increased the gap from our direct competitors.”
