On January 6, a mob stormed the US Capitol in Washington. A judge is now imposing the harshest sentence to date against a Trump supporter. She also wants to set an example for future changes in power.
Washington – Less than a year after the attack on the US Capitol, a court has handed down the harshest sentence to date against a supporter of then President Donald Trump.
Federal judge Tanya Chutkan sentenced the 54-year-old man to 63 months in prison in Washington on Friday, US media reported. This is the longest sentence ever imposed on any of the more than 700 people charged in connection with the attack. Robert P. had hurled a fire extinguisher at police officers, among other things.
Five people died
Five people were killed in the attack on the seat of the US Congress on January 6, 2021. The attack on the heart of US democracy, in which many MPs and senators feared for their lives, shook the country. Trump had previously incited his supporters in a speech. After the storm he had to face impeachment proceedings. In the end, however, he was acquitted. In November, a gym owner was sentenced to 41 months in prison for the Capitol attack.
Prosecutors accused the defendants of throwing a wooden plank at the police officers, spraying them with a fire extinguisher, and then throwing the empty container at them. Robert P. told the judge that he was very ashamed of his behavior that day.
Earlier, in a letter to Judge Chutkan, he had written that he recognized that Trump and his allies had lied to their supporters by “spreading the wrong story about a stolen election” and demanding that “it be our duty to do so.” To stand up to tyranny ”. (…) “I did not realize that they were the tyrants who wanted to stay in power at any cost” by conjuring up chaos.
Anti-democratic groups
Judge Chutkan said in the delivery of the verdict, according to CNN, “Every day we hear reports of anti-democratic groups and people planning potential violence in 2024.”
It must be made clear that the attempt to prevent the peaceful transfer of power is an attack on the law enforcement authorities and will be punished with a certain penalty. dpa
