In an interview with a conservative podcast, former US President Donald Trump called Russian President Vladimir Putin “very smart” over his decision to recognize the independence of the two breakaway provinces of Lugansk and Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. He stated, however, that this would not have happened under his rule.
“I saw it on television yesterday, and I said, ‘This is great.’ Putin declares a large part of Ukraine – Ukraine – independent. Oh, that’s wonderful,” Trump told host Buck Sexton.
“I said, ‘how smart is that?’ He’s going to come in and be a peacekeeper. We could use that on our southern border. That’s the strongest peacekeeping force I’ve ever seen. There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen,” the former president continued. “Here’s a guy who’s very experienced… I know him very well. Very, very well.”
“I think he saw this opportunity. I knew he always wanted Ukraine. I used to talk to him about it. speak at length on the subject,” said the former president of his conversations with Putin.
Trump criticized Biden’s handling of the crisis and claimed that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would not have happened while he was in office.
“You have to admit you’re very smart. And do you know what Biden’s response was? There was no response. They didn’t have any for that. It’s very sad. Very sad,” he lamented. “I got along very well with him,” Trump expressed, regarding the Russian president.
“He liked me. I liked him. I mean, you know, he’s a tough nut to crack, and he’s got a lot of charm and a lot of pride. But he loves his country, you know? He loves his country.”
Trump also predicted that China will follow Russia’s example and try to advance on Taiwan.
“They are waiting until after the Olympics,” he said of the Chinese government. “Now the Olympics are over, the timer is over, right? [Xi] wants that,” said Trump, who called Russia and China “almost twins”.
“Putin would never have done that, and Xi would never have done that. [sob meu governo]”, he added.
