With the death of the French Quentin Lavalee, chief mechanic for the team’s 726th car pH Spot, participant in the category of classics of the Dakar, after a traffic accident in a link of the last stage, starting in Bisha and finishing in Jeddah, there are already 73 people who have lost their lives in the 44 editions of the rally.

“This morning at 11:30 (Saudi Arabian time), at kilometer 234 of the assistance link route, there was an accident between an assistance vehicle and a local truck, as reported by the Local Police.
Unfortunately, the driver of the vehicle, Quentin Lavalée, a French national and member of the PH Spot team, has died as a result of the accident,” the Dakar organization reported in a statement.
“I was 20 years old. The passenger who was traveling with him, Maxime Frère, a Belgian national, was injured and was taken consciously to the National Guards Hospital in Jeddah where he is undergoing a full check-up. He has an abdominal and thoracic contusion,” the letter continued.
The Dakar’s saddest years are 1986, in which seven people died, including the ‘alma mater’ of the event Thierry Sabine, and 1988, when six died. In addition, in the three editions disputed in Saudi Arabia there have been deaths.
Two Spaniards are on the list of dead: Tomás Urpí, who followed some stages of the test in 1996, and the pilot José Manuel Pérez, ‘El Carni’, as a result of an accident in 2005.
