Replacing one hour of sitting time a week with one hour of physical exercise is not complicated at all for Spanish society. This small gesture, among other things, would help reduce mortality among the adult population from all causes by a large percentageaccording to a study led by researchers from the Carlos III Health Institute.
Against all odds, the results are not based on theoretical scenarios, but on real data. And how were they obtained? Well, after analyzing the data of 30,955 people between 15 and 69 years old who participated in two National Health Surveys, carried out in 2011 and 2017.
Investigation
Apparently, the researchers analyzed the data from these surveys to record information about the time people spent sitting and the physical activity they performed, differentiating this into low, moderate or high intensity activities.
These data were linked to the mortality registry of the National Statistics Institute (INE) to know the vital status of the participants. Finally, through different models of scientific analysisthe researchers estimated the relative risk of dying when replacing the sedentary lifestyle by physical exercise.
After an average follow-up of the study participants of almost 6 years, 957 deathsand the results show that replacing one hour per week of sedentary lifestyle (sitting time) with one hour per week of moderate or high physical activity was associated with a minor risk of mortality from all causes (3.3 percent lower risk).

Likewise, this expert has assured that these changes “introduce greater motivation” in people who cannot carry out moderate or high intensity exercisessince the study shows that you can perform a lower intensity activity and also reduce the risk of death.
