A multimedia totem was positioned on platform 1 of the Tiburtina station, in the presence of the CEO of the FS Group Luigi Ferraris, to remember over a thousand women, men and children of the Jewish religion who on 18 October 1943 were deported from Rome to the Birkenau.
«We bring people, passengers, dreams and – in times of war – we were unfortunately forced to bring men, women and children to places where atrocities were committed. Initiatives like this serve not only to commemorate, but also to be a tool for reflection for future generations. Memory must remain alive every day, every day. Because civil coexistence is always built and not only in moments of commemoration.” These are the words of the CEO of the FS Group Luigi Ferraris who, at the Rome Tiburtina station, inaugurated a multimedia totem to remember the over one thousand women, men and children of the Jewish religion who on 18 October 1943 were deported from Rome to Birkenau camp.
Also present at the inauguration were the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, the Senator of the Italian Republic Ester Mieli, the President of the Lazio Region Francesco Rocca, the Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri, the President of the Jewish Community of Rome Victor Fadlun and the President of the Museum Foundation of the Shoah Mario Venezia.
The video, also made with the contribution of the Istituto Luce – Cinecittà, which can be viewed on the totem, tells the testimony of some of the 16 survivors of the deportation, 15 men and 1 woman, no children. The presence of totems in the stations, a crossroads of cultures and a place of meeting and discussion, represents a warning not to give in to indifference and an invitation to reflection to combat all forms of violence and discrimination.
The Memory Track project, promoted by the Ministry of Culture, the FS Group, the Jewish Community of Rome and the Shoah Museum Foundation, began last year with the first information totem at Platform 21 of the Milan Central Station, from which between In 1943 and 1944, thousands of Jews and political opponents were deported by the Nazi-fascists to Auschwitz-Birkenau, Mauthausen and other extermination, concentration or collection camps such as Fossoli and Bolzano.
