Overview :
During the ‘Kenshiki Forum’, Toyota unveiled a special Yaris at its European headquarters in Brussels. It runs on hydrogen, but without a fuel cell. Like other manufacturers, Toyota is experimenting with a solution that is back in fashion: the hydrogen combustion engine. This Yaris GR H2 prototype directly inherits technologies developed for competition in a Corolla Sport that also burns hydrogen.
The engine is a 1.6 liter pressure-fed three-cylinder identical to the racing Corolla’s G16E-GTS. The Yaris GR can therefore rely on an internal combustion engine with a fuel and injection system that has been adapted for the use of hydrogen as fuel. That gas burns faster than gasoline. It also has the advantage of being clean: the emissions are water and also a little NOx, but in very small quantities. For the circle to be sound, the hydrogen must be produced with renewable energy. Nevertheless, this remains a solution to be explored for reducing greenhouse gases and emissions in general.
