Tom Hardy: “No one is immune from seeing this movie”

Tom Hardy in ‘Venom: There Will Be Carnage’.

The British actor meets again three years later with the slimy alien and villain in ‘Venom: There will be carnage’

When Venom, the slimy parasite and villain from outer space, landed on movie screens in 2018, few would bet that Tom Hardy (London, 1977), the tough guy from British cinema, was capable of portraying his alter ego, the soulful Eddie. Brock. The actor conquered the world box office.

“Why meet Venom again?”

– It was a creative decision that came out of the studio. My main idea was to lean on the director, and when they cast Andy Serkis I thought he was perfect. He is a filmmaker who understands the medium, the special effects, which fits into this new space that we are trying to invent. Andy and I have tried to lay the foundations for the character’s future.

–Did Andy Serkis convey the functionality of the Venom universe?

–Andy’s language works on several levels. He is a director who learned his craft shooting with Peter Jackson ‘The Lord of the Rings’. He has the ability to film in multiple sets at the same time to create that multilevel that then emerges on screen. The characters are represented in different digital universes, and I think he has managed to bring imagination to the visual narrative. In my opinion, he is one of the best directors of the last two decades and I am not lying when I say that we actors admire him. It is wonderful to be able to work with someone who understands you and knows how to explain what they need from you at all times, their language is that of an actor.

“Did you know Serkis before working with him?”

–I had met him at various industry events. We had talked about the possibility of collaborating together, and I think it makes sense that he was commissioned with this film because it was not easy to carry out Sony’s idea of the ‘multiverse’. There are many levels of digitization of the medium and that required triple work for him. Andy was the perfect choice.

“Did they make Venom an epic adventure?”

-That was the intention. Getting the audience to leave the movie with their mouths open, a giant roller coaster from start to finish. Nobody leaves the cinema immune to what they have experienced. This movie is a journey through emotions and audiences might not be able to cope with it if it lasted longer.

–It is true, the footage does not arrive at two hours.

–I think we have adjusted enough for the audience to literally hallucinate with the movie. Adding Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady to the equation accelerates the pace of the story, because we not only tell the current dynamic between Eddie and Venom, but also the appearance of Carnage in their universe. We did not want to delay its arrival on the screen so that the public had a chance to enjoy it. We have told the story that we wanted to tell in the amount of time that seemed necessary.

-It is a film where there is room for romance.

–In fact, it is possible to classify it as a romantic story. I mean that it opens up to the possibility of romance from a surreal and absurd point of view. It is a dysfunctional love, as is only possible with this type of character. This is a strange pair, which could be classified between ‘Thelma and Louise’ and ‘Born killers’. There are three intertwined couples in very different relationships, with varying degrees of functionality, or dysfunctionality, depending on how each understands it. It is an opera aria of emotions.

Venom: There will be carnage.

–Carnage and Cletus Kasady are the nemesis of Venom and his son.

-Yes. A perspective that we approach from various points of view, because that relationship allows the Venom universe to open up and we can travel different paths in the future. I think it’s going to be fun to continue investigating the world of this character after making this movie.

– Does it imply the possibility of a new installment of Venom?

–I think there is always room for more films of this saga, why not? We depend on the success at the box office, on the response from the public, but I hope it will be as positive as the first one. If this is the last installment of Venom I will be very proud, because we have done a great job.

–Another chapter of Venom can also be found in video games.

Yes, it’s about establishing the franchise and then the world wants to play with us.
