If the media attention of the FIA World Council was obviously oriented towards the investigation that the International Federation has decided to open to clarify what happened in the final of the Abu Dhabi GP with the disputed safety car, the appointment of Jean Todt as honorary president of the FIA decided yesterday unanimously by the World Council on the proposal of the General Assembly “… in recognition of the invaluable contribution to the Federation and to sport as a whole during his presidency from 2009 to 2021”.
The federal apparatus, therefore, recognizes merit to the French manager and keeps him linked to the FIA even if tomorrow we will know which of the two candidates in the running, Graham Stoker and Mohammed Ben Sulayem will be elected in his place.
It will be curious to see if this honorific position, for reasons of expediency, could conflict with the return of Jean Todt to Ferrari as super consultant. In reality, the figure that has been attributed to the French manager is totally devoid of powers, so the possibility that the transalpine may soon be called to Maranello by president John Elkann should not lapse at all.
The World Council has also recognized honorary roles for other personalities of the FIA and two of these are Italian: Angelo Sticchi Damiani, vice president since 2009, and Beppe Muscioni, member of the circuits commission since 1980.
Jose Abed, vice president from 2005, Heping Wan, vice president from 2006 to 2017, Gerard Saillant, president of the Medical Commission from 2008 and 2021 and Rod Parkin, member of the historical commission from 2008 to 2020, also deserved an appointment.
