The Global Goals Week kicks off today at Expo 2020 Dubai, in cooperation with the United Nations, and is being held for the first time outside New York City.
The Global Goals Week at Expo 2020 Dubai focuses on a key axis of bringing the world together to advance common progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in order to build a better and more equitable future for all by 2030.
Global Goals Week will run until January 22nd and will serve as a platform for various actors to communicate and work towards achieving the global goals for sustainable development.
Her Excellency Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Expo 2020 Dubai, said: The UAE believes in the importance of global collective action to create a future in which all can thrive in peace, dignity and equality on a planet with a healthy and sound environment.
Her Excellency added: “Expo 2020 Dubai brings the world together in a spirit of hope and optimism, and provides a platform to search for solutions to the most prominent challenges facing humanity, and hosting the United Nations global goals at Expo 2020 is evidence of our vision to build just, inclusive and sustainable societies for all.”
For her part, Her Excellency Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, said: At the core of the 2030 Agenda, urgent action is needed to address rising poverty and inequality, empower women and girls, and address the climate emergency. The Global Goals Week at Expo 2020 Dubai is a crucial opportunity to demonstrate our growing ambition and commitment to achieving the Global Goals and making them present at all levels.
Global Goals Week includes a large number of impactful events, including the opening speech by H.E. Amina Mohammed and a presentation on January 15th on the largest 360-degree screen in the world in Al Wasl Square that will highlight the commitment of young people around the world towards the Sustainable Development Goals, leading to an opening ceremony Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and the Zayed Sustainability Prize Awards Ceremony, scheduled to be held at the Dubai Exhibition Center at “Expo 2020 Dubai” January 17th.
