There are several systems to know your state of health and your physical fitness, but the prestigious Mayo Clinic offers one that has to do with one of the most basic exercises: the push-ups.
Push-ups engage most major muscle groups throughout the body, including the legs, abs, shoulders, the back, chest and arms.
The move involves starting face down on the floor, with your toes bent, your elbows bent, and hands at shoulder height.
Keeping your body straight and parallel to the ground, push yourself up until your arms are straight and You are supported on your hands and toes. Then you come back down to complete a full push-up and continue until you need to stop and rest.
Depending on age and gender, the Mayo Clinic has established a target number of push-ups in a row that can be done, starting for 25 years. For men, the figure is 28 push-ups in one go and women, 20 to “show a good level of physical fitness.”
As age increases the objective decreases. Starting at age 35, the number drops by one for women, while men should be able to perform 21 push-ups, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Ten years later, when the man is 45 years old, the Mayo Clinic states that women should be able to do 14 push-ups, while the count remains at 16 for men.
For people aged 55, the count is reduced to 10 push-ups for women and 12 for men. For the older age, according to the Mayo Clinic list, both men and women aged 65 should be able to do 10 push-ups in one sitting.
