The General Directorate of Traffic explains how to carry out this procedure easily
If you are thinking of selling your car, you should know that you will have to change the ownership of the vehicle. In order to carry out this procedure, the car must be free of charges and registered. Before making the transfer of a vehicle, it must be verified that it is registered and up to date in the payment of local taxes and penalties related to the car (vehicle documentation, compulsory insurance, ITV in order and its state of conservation). If there is a domain reservation, embargo, or a seal order on it, it may lead to certain limitations when making the transfer or notification of sale.
Before changing the ownership in the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) you must justify the payment, exemption or non-subjection of the property transfer tax (ITP). For this, it is necessary to present model 620 621 (as appropriate) settled in the Autonomous Community in which the person who acquires the vehicle has his fiscal domicile.
Requirements, according to the DGT
– If you are the buyer of a used vehicle, you have a maximum period of 30 days from the signing of the contract to make the change of ownership of it. Once the procedure has been completed, a new circulation permit will be issued, which will only be valid if you have a valid ITV.
– Before carrying out the process of changing ownership, you should take into account the recommendations of the DGT as the buyer of the vehicle, to avoid problems.
– In order for the car to be transferred, it must be in an administrative status and meet the rest of the requirements indicated in the ‘Prerequisites’ section.
– The contract for the sale of the vehicle must be signed by both the buyer and the seller on each of the pages that make it up and the buyer must keep a photocopy of the DNI, NIF or Residence Card of the seller. It is advisable that the exact time the car is delivered be included in the contract.
– Before making the change of ownership, you must justify the payment, exemption or non-subjection of the property transfer tax (form 620 or form 621, as appropriate) in the community in which you have your fiscal domicile. According to the DGT, in almost all the Autonomous Communities you can do it electronically and without complications.
Via Internet
If you do it through the Internet you will need your digital certificate, electronic DNI or your Cl@ve credentials to access the service. You will also have to pay the corresponding fee, you can pay the fee in the same form by pressing the ‘Buy’ button on the application panel depending on whether it is a moped or any other vehicle. If you have previously purchased the fee, you can enter the fee number, which can be found on the last page of the Help purchase receipt.
Once inside the duplicate request record, you must fill in the contact fields, notification method and enter the license plate of the vehicle to be transferred as well as the CIF/NIF/NIE of both the seller and the buyer. Then, attach the rest of the requirements mentioned above (copy of the seller’s DNI, document that certifies the transfer of the vehicle and proof of payment/exemption/not subject to Property Transfer Tax settled in the Autonomous Community of the purchaser).
