Since yesterday, the Public Transport Card (TTP) for mobile phones with Android 7.0 system can be activated in Madrid for 10-trip tickets, tourist passes and the airport supplement to Madrid-Barajas.
This measure constitutes the first step to fully integrate the transport card into the mobile throughout 2025. It is part of the first phase of the TTP virtualization process, that is, the migration of the public transport ticket system by card physical to a virtual environment.
Free download for six months
During the next six months, the download of this application for smartphones will be free through the Virtual Transportation Card app, which works on devices that have NFC reading with Android 7.0 system (phones purchased from 2016 onwards) and with Google Wallet. It should not be confused with the application that is used to load the physical card.
It is obtained from the Play Store and once installed, you have to associate it with a bank credit card and from that moment on it can be used to make payments.
The user has to choose what type of bonus they want to purchase and then click the confirm and pay button to complete the transaction. The trips will be discounted and when the virtual card reaches zero it is time to reload.
This will allow the user to access transportation services by bringing the mobile phone close to the access control devices, without having to carry the physical card.
The Regional Transport Consortium (CRTM) is already working to ensure that the monthly personal pass is also available by 2025, which would achieve total digitalization, facilitating its widespread use, including iOS technology.
