This week on Xbox has been quite heavy, since not so long ago they confirmed the closure of four development studios, where those who are most blasé about the decision have been Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworksand that is something that the community has not taken well, especially they have gone against the company’s executives, mainly in Phil Spencer. And now, it has been mentioned that perhaps these decisions no longer even come from the video game brand, but from the higher ups, that is, Microsoft Gaming.
One of the important journalists of the medium IGN has drawn some conclusions or suspicions about what is happening in the company, to this is added that you will be able to have a direct talk with Phil Spencer when the video space of Xbox within Summer Game Festival. And a quite interesting phrase has come up in some conversations he has had with veterans of the brand who for one reason or another are no longer working there, and the phrase that stands out is “It’s no longer Xbox, it’s Microsoft Gaming.”
Here is what the veterans said:
I’ve had long conversations with a handful of Xbox founders and we’ve all come to the same conclusion: it’s no longer Xbox, it’s Microsoft Gaming. There is too much surface area. You have, effectively, three giant companies at play and Microsoft has never finished the integration with Bethesda and Activision is three times bigger than Xbox was. Xbox 360 launched with only a few hundred. The last I heard is that Xbox is now almost 30,000 people.
Xbox’s situation when it tried to acquire Activision was very different. They couldn’t have consoles in stock, they made money from the growth of Game Pass. The acquisition seemed like a piece of cake. Now console sales are down, post-covid recession. Game Pass is slowing down. The acquisition took a lot more time than expected, and the focus on fighting the FTC probably cost them time they would have spent thinking about people and studios.
All of this has been complemented by the fact that they are no longer the decisions of a single person, but rather that it is something joint that must be applied by the senior management of the company in question, ensuring that it can not only be Phil Spencer who is in charge of saying which studies are they go and which ones arrive. It would be a long process in which now he is the one who is sent as the executioner, but in the end he has not said that he must eliminate certain divisions.

Author’s note: The situation has become quite difficult with what is happening in the company, to the point that many developers should be afraid that their game will not be successful and the problem is that there will not be many people who will buy it at full price for the mere existence of Game Pass.
