The building, ceded by the City Council to Paso Encarnado, will be turned into a museum
The Lorca City Council has completed the restoration of the hermitage of La Peñica, in the San Cristóbal neighborhood, which suffered structural damage from the 2011 earthquakes and has remained closed since then.
The mayor, Diego José Mateos, explained this Thursday that despite the fact that the Consistory had received 40,000 euros from the Insurance Compensation Consortium for the repair of the building, it was never carried out.
Now, with its own funds, a comprehensive repair has been carried out inside the building due to the serious damage suffered by the arches and stone walls, and work has also been done on the outside area with the consolidation of the access staircase.
Mateos recalled that the City Council updated the catalog of protected assets of the General Municipal Planning Plan (PGOM) for the incorporation of nine properties with unique architecture located in the San Cristóbal neighborhood with the aim of safeguarding their hallmarks, and among them found the hermitage of La Peñica.
The building was ceded to Paso Encarnado in 1999 for use as an embroidery workshop and the brotherhood later used it for its music school and for storage of clothes and belongings.
The construction is “very important” for the brotherhood, said its president, Alberto Secada. Once rehabilitated, “we want to go one step further to make it a museum”, so that it can house extraordinary exhibitions starting next Easter.
