On the occasion of Mother’s Day, which in Australia is not celebrated in May, a family consisting of a father, mother, two daughters and a dog, decided to go for a walk in the countryside around Bendigoa city located in the center of the State of Victoria, 130 kilometers from Melbourne.
Walking the family found a very special stone on the ground. They did not know that, in fact, they were holding a gold nugget weighing more than 600 grams. The father, who preferred to remain anonymous, told the newspaper Bendigo Advertiser how the incredible facts went.
It was Mother’s Day and we decided to go for a walk. Mom actually stayed at home so me, my two daughters and Lucky, our dog, went for a walk. When we saw the stone my daughter practically kicked it as she walked, then she picked it up and said, ‘Dad, is this gold?’ I said ‘it could be’.
They then took it to a goldsmith, confirming that it was gold.
At first we couldn’t find a scale that could weigh the nugget correctly. Eventually we took it to a supermarket and asked the deli department to do us the favor of weighing it.
The record-breaking gold nugget weighed more than 600 grams
624 grams of gold, for a value of more than 35 thousand Australian dollars (about 26 thousand euros). A truly profitable walk.
