The fire burned more than 40 hectares due to a short circuit caused by the remains of a greenhouse that came into contact with the power lines
The Civil Guard investigated a farmer as allegedly responsible for a fire that started last summer in the area of El Saladillo, in the municipality of Mazarrón, which destroyed 41.71 hectares of fine, dry and low grass. The Forestry Brigade (Brifor), environmental agents, the Helicopter Brigade, four firefighters, eight aerial means and 18 motorized pumps participated in the extinction.
Members of the Nature Protection Service (Seprona), with the collaboration of the Environmental Crimes Investigation Brigade (Brida), went to the affected area to carry out a technical-ocular inspection that confirmed that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the electrical wiring.
Specifically, it was caused by contact between some wires that had been embedded in the plastic of a greenhouse, located about 150 meters away, with the conductor of the power line. These remains were found entangled in the conductor of the power line and were approximately 10 meters long and one meter wide.
The investigations carried out by Seprona determined the involvement of the company that manages the agricultural work. On the afternoon in which the events occurred, there were gusts of wind of 39 kilometers per hour from the southeast component, which coincided with the trajectory where the electrical tower was located. This confirmed that the plastic that caused the fire came from the accumulation of this material that was on the farm. Added to this were the weather conditions marked by high temperature and low humidity.
The investigation culminated in the identification, location and investigation of a farmer who has been instructed as the alleged perpetrator of an accidental forest fire crime. The individual was placed at the disposal of the Totana Investigating Court.
