A quantum computing company, named Quera Computing, announced that it has raised 230 million dollars in which it has been qualified as the largest investment in neutral atom technology, a bet in which there was not much confidence, until recently time, in the creation of cubits.
Among the entities that have invested in this ambitious project, the Google Quantum AI Business Unit, creator of the Willow Quantum Chip, and the Risk Capital Fund, SoftBank Vision Fund, among others.
“As far as we know, this is the largest risk investment in a company of neutral atoms,” said Doug Finke, the famous computer scientist, to Nature. As an advisor to Global Quantum Intelligence, a business analysis company based in California, FINKE said that quantum computers of neutral atoms are gaining ground compared to other particles used to create cubits (or qubits).
Boston -based and derived from a laboratory at Harvard University, Quera is a company that self -writes as a leader in the commercialization of quantum computers through the use of neutral atoms. The largest quantum computer in the world of public access is also boasted.
The company, which in addition to Harvard, also relies on MIT investigations, seeks to take advantage of this financing in the development of quantum tolerant to failure technology, that is, capable of reliably carrying out calculations, even in the presence of errors.
Why neutral atoms?
Recall that everyday computers store and process information in the form of binary numbers or bits, those that represent 0 or 1. On the other hand, the basic unit of a quantum processor is a cubit, that is, a quantum bit.
Unlike a bit, an ulna can be placed in a state of 0, 1 or a combination of both; This is known as “state of overlap”, a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics. This property allows quantum processors to store and process much larger data sets and more quickly than any classic computer, however powerful it is.
Now, these cubits are those that make up a quantum processor. Cubits are highly subatomic particles, such as electrons or photons, which to control their high level of instability, are manipulated by electric and magnetic fields specially designed for this purpose.
While there are companies that work with ions, Quera specializes in neutral atoms to create and stabilize cubits. Its method ensures facilitating the scalability of the system and reducing error rates compared to other quantum systems. Other Startup which is also bet on neutral atoms is atom computing.
IBM, Microsoft and Google are the main companies of Big Tech that seek to invest in development projects in the field of quantum computing. Google estimates that the first commercial applications with this technology will be available within the next five years, although it still does not have well defined what its practical use would be.
