Daniel Ortega’s regime has declared Bettina Muscheidt ‘persona non grata’ after demanding the release of political prisoners and the restoration of democracy
Different dissident organizations in Nicaragua condemned this Thursday the imminent expulsion from the country of the ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Managua, Bettina Muscheidt, after being questioned the day before by the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry. “We address the people of Nicaragua and the international community with the aim of condemning the expulsion of Ambassador Bettina Muscheidt, permanent representative of the EU in the country, under false and repetitive arguments of exercising ‘interference with national sovereignty,'” he said. a group of twelve opposition organizations in a declaration.
Muscheidt’s presumed expulsion was announced by independent Nicaraguan media in exile, which cited sources linked to the European Parliament. Until now, neither the government of Daniel Ortega, nor the EU delegation in the country, have commented on the situation of Muscheidt in Managua.
The questioning of the ambassador in the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry was confirmed by the spokesman for the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, Peter Stano. Until noon this Thursday Muscheidt was in Nicaragua, and he is expected to leave the country next Saturday.
“End the repression”
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega ordered Muscheidt’s expulsion from the country on Wednesday, after last week the EU delegation to the United Nations demanded the release of political prisoners and the return of democracy to the Nicaraguan people. In addition, he declared her ‘persona non grata’. “The European Union calls on the Nicaraguan authorities to respect their own commitments, the Nicaraguan Constitution and international human rights norms and laws,” the Union delegation said last week at the UN General Assembly.
“The Nicaraguan authorities must end the repression, including the repression against political opponents, the clergy, the independent media, civil society and human rights defenders,” he stressed.
