Washington.- The President’s Administration Joe Biden must express to the Government of Mexico the concern in the United States due to the recently approved legal changes that affect the INErequested yesterday the Democratic senator Bob Menendez.
Calling it part of a democratic setback, the chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee sent a letter to the Secretary of State, Anthony Blinkenwhere he points out that the so-called electoral “Plan B” represents risks.
“I am writing to express our growing concern over the continued efforts of the Mexican President Lopez Obrador and his party to erode the credibility and autonomy of Mexico’s electoral institutions,” said legislator Menéndez in a letter obtained by Grupo REFORMA.
“Despite the failure to pass a constitutional reform to effectively dismantle the INE earlier this month, the Mexican Congress has just approved a broad package of electoral reforms that entails significant risks to the independence and impartiality of future elections.
“We urge you to present these concerns directly to the Mexican government and to continue working with the international community to express our support for safeguarding independent democratic institutions, vital to Mexico’s democratic process,” he added.
In his letter, Menéndez summarizes the consequences that the “Plan B” has for the INE, including the disappearance of its key bodies, such as the Executive General Board, the Executive Secretariat.
“This new legislation carries many risks for the independence and impartiality of future Mexican elections,” he said.
“The efforts of President López Obrador to politicize the functioning of the electoral management bodies of Mexico and the approval of his ‘Plan B’ should be viewed with skepticismor in light of other parallel efforts to undermine democratic institutions,” he concludes.
Until now, the Administration of Biden has avoided speaking out directly on the changes contained in “Plan B”, but the US State Department assured yesterday that the Government is indeed paying attention to the potential changes to the Mexican electoral system.
“If he State Department is monitoring electoral reforms of Mexico,” said a spokesperson for the agency who requested anonymity when questioned by REFORMA on the subject.
