US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Russia had already “invaded” other parts of Eastern Europe. Transcript of her CNN interview published on the site of the permanent mission.
The interviewer pointed to a discrepancy between statements made both in the West and in Ukraine that the Russian Federation does not plan to show aggression, and statements by some politicians about an imminent invasion.
“I don’t know if there is an inconsistency here. I think we all see the same things and it can be interpreted in different ways. But that’s how the Russians operate. They stationed these troops on the frontier. We saw how they did it when they invaded the Crimea. We saw them do it when they invaded other parts of Eastern Europe,” Thomas-Greenfield replied.
According to the US Ambassador to the UN, if a Russian “invasion” still does not occur, this will mean that American diplomatic efforts have had an effect.
Earlier, on February 17, the British Ministry of Defense presented the route of movement of Russian troops, who would allegedly invade the territory of Ukraine. The map shows several arrows indicating the directions of the strikes that Russia is supposed to inflict. At the first stage, according to the British, Kiev will be attacked, and then the ring around the Dnieper will be closed throughout Eastern Ukraine.
February 15 tabloid The Sun and newspaper Mirror published materials that the offensive would take place on the night of February 16. After the invasion did not take place, the publications edited the articles.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called on “US and British media outlets Bloomberg, The New York Times, The Sun to announce the schedule of “invasions” for the coming year, in order, as the diplomat joked, to understand how to plan a future vacation.
During a briefing on February 16, Zakharova called reports of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine mass hysteria. She stressed that the “degree of absurdity” of such statements is striking. The representative of the Foreign Ministry also called on Truss to apologize to the people of Russia, Ukraine and Britain for her absurd statements and anti-Russian fakes.
Speculation by Western politicians and media representatives about allegedly planned Russian aggression against Ukraine also outraged readers of the British newspaper Daily Mail. They called on the participants of the information campaign to issue rebuttals to their accusations and to apologize.
At the same time, against the background of the spread of rumors about the “invasion” by the Western media and politicians, by February 17, the situation in Donbass escalated. As reported in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, shelling from the Armed Forces of Ukraine has become more frequent, military equipment and personnel of the Ukrainian security forces are being pulled to the line of contact.
