Politico: The State Department warned Congress about the problems in recognizing the Russian Federation as a “sponsor of terrorism”
The State Department secretly warned the US Congress about the problems that could result in recognizing Russia as a “country sponsor of terrorism.” The newspaper reports Politico.
Multiple sources familiar with the conversations said agency officials have posed serious problems with the legislative initiative to congressional offices in recent days.
According to the publication, in particular, if the Russian Federation is recognized as a “sponsor of terrorism” by Washington, the multilateral agreements in Istanbul on lifting restrictions on the supply of Russian products for export and on Russia’s assistance in the export of Ukrainian grain will be in jeopardy.

Foreign Ministry warnings
Director of the North America Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Darchiev previously stated that Western countries, led by the United States, have already “trampled international law and absolute taboos in diplomatic practice.” According to him, if Washington continues to pursue such a destructive policy and declares Russia a “state sponsor of terrorism”, it may cross the point of no return, which will likely lead to the severing of diplomatic relations with Moscow.
In this context, I will mention the legislative initiative now being discussed in Congress to declare Russia a “country-sponsor of terrorism.” If it is implemented, it will mean that Washington has crossed the point of no return with the most serious collateral damage to bilateral diplomatic relations, down to their downgrading and even rupture. American side warned
At the same time, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Zakharova, announced the possibility of a severance of relations between Moscow and Washington if the US Congress declares Russia a “country sponsor of terrorism,” she warned.
Latvian decision
On August 11, the Latvian parliament officially recognized Russia as a “state sponsoring terrorism” and its actions in Ukraine as “terrorism.” They said that allegedly Russia has been supporting and providing indirect and direct support to “terrorist regimes” such as the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria for many years.

Later, a deputy of the Latvian Seimas, a member of the opposition party “Consent” Igor Pimenov, in an interview with Lenta.ru, said that the recognition by the Latvian parliament of Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism only exacerbates the global political crisis that began against the backdrop of a special military operation in Ukraine.
