UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary Di Carlo called negotiations the only way to resolve differences between key players on Ukraine. She stated this at a meeting of the UN Security Council, the broadcast of which ongoing on YouTube.
“We are extremely concerned about the possible implications of recent developments for the existing negotiating framework,” she said. Di Carlo noted that “with the current risks and uncertainty” it is important to have a dialogue.
An urgent meeting of the UN Security Council against the backdrop of Russia’s recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) began at 5:00 on February 22. A call to urgently convene a meeting of the UN Security Council against the background of Moscow’s recognition of the independence of the republics of Donbass was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the DPR and LPR, as well as treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the republics.
