The United Nations has chosen the UAE as a member of the Statistical Committee, one of the eight technical committees affiliated with the Organization’s Economic and Social Council, for its next session 2025-2028, in a membership that is the first of its kind for the country since the founding of the Committee in 1946. The country’s selection for membership in the United Nations Statistical Committee supports the efforts of Enhancing the UAE’s participation in international initiatives, and providing an international platform for sharing the UAE’s advanced models in a way that enhances the efficiency and accuracy of statistical analysis globally, and supports the establishment of digital platforms for data exchange.
The Statistical Commission, whose membership includes 24 countries elected by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, represents the pinnacle of the global statistical system and the highest body that brings together senior statisticians and experts. It is responsible for making decisions related to international statistical activities, developing statistical standards and following up on their implementation at the national and international levels.
Hanan Mansour Ahli, Director of the Federal Center for Competitiveness and Statistics, confirmed that the UAE’s election to membership in the United Nations Statistical Commission embodies the UAE’s leadership in the digital transformation of the statistical system, and the advanced global position it has achieved, and translates the focus of the wise leadership on enhancing the state’s effective participation in efforts to improve government work. In general, enhancing the potential of the statistical sector at the national and international levels.
Hanan Ahli said that the statistical system in the UAE, with the support of local statistical centers, employs technology, digital solutions, and artificial intelligence techniques, and has transformed the system from a mere collector of information and data, into an integrated system to support strategic planning and innovate proactive solutions to expected future challenges, relying on a scientific and practical methodology in data analysis.
She pointed out that the country’s membership in the United Nations Statistical Commission will constitute an important platform for sharing distinguished Emirati experiences and exchanging statistical knowledge with countries with the best experiences in this field.
For his part, Mohammed Hassan, Executive Director of the Statistics and Data Science Sector at the Centre, stressed that the UAE’s election to be the only Gulf country in the United Nations Statistical Commission reflects its effective role in developing solutions for employing data in supporting the achievement of global sustainable development goals, through its embrace of the Centre. The regional platform for the United Nations Big Data for the Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to support building the capabilities of the statistical community in the Middle East and North Africa region, and employ big data and artificial intelligence techniques in developing the statistics sector.
The UAE’s membership in the Committee supports its contribution to leading global statistical thought, enables it to participate effectively in making decisions for global statistical activities, develops statistical standards, concepts and methods, and provides opportunities to learn about the best international statistical practices, standards and methodologies, and to build on the best practices developed by countries around the world in The field of statistics in partnership with international organizations.
