The jury of the True Story Award has awarded the correspondent and reporter of EL PAÍS in Mexico Jacobo García for the work cloudy caribbean, a story that dives into the coastal territory shared by Mexico, Guatemala and Belize, one of the most porous and unknown regions of the southern border of America. According to the ruling, announced this Friday in Bern, Switzerland, “the first virtue of García’s text is to contrast” what the literature written about this territory since the 16th century suggests “by showing us how little we know about this shared area.” “It is a first-hand account of the current geopolitical situation in the region,” highlights the jury, which awards one of the most prestigious awards to journalistic work in the world.
The True Story Award organization received almost 1,200 texts in 12 languages, including Arabic, Chinese or Russian. Between 60 and 120 articles per language were submitted. The jury – made up of professionals such as the Australian-Lebanese journalist Rania Abouzeid, the reporter for The New Yorker Jon Lee Anderson, the Argentinean Leila Guerriero from Argentina, the Chinese -British Xiaoulu Guo, the Frenchman Patrick de Saint-Exupéry, the Swiss-German Nicola Steiner and the Thai Sutchichai Yoon- highlight that Jacobo García won for “an extremely well written article ”, “for being a very talented and hard-working journalist” and “fearless”. He also highlights that “he went where few reporters go, risking his life to talk to the people he quotes in his article.” “Jacobo does not stereotype the people with whom he talks and describes a story that is neither of heroes nor of victims, neither white nor black. It is a story about the gray areas inhabited by so many people forced to live on the extremes, on the margins of society. It is an extraordinary piece chosen unanimously by the jury”, continues the ruling.
Jon Lee Anderson recalled that the story was part of a project promoted by two media outlets: EL PAÍS Mexico and El Salvador The lighthouse. “Turbid Caribbean is one of the six parts in which the routes of drugs and emigration from Central America to the border between Mexico and the United States are explored.” The True Story Award is one of the most distinguished journalism awards. It aims to make the voices of reporters known beyond the borders of their countries and increase the diversity of perspectives.
