The pineapple was exotic, but that was a long time ago. For years It is a common food in the Spanish diet. In addition to its delicious flavorit is a fruit with multiple health benefits. Beyond being a dessert and serving us in sweet recipes, pineapple can also be used in savory recipes.
But buying pineapple and getting it right is not easy. We have been eating melon for centuries and we still don’t know how to choose the good one (touch, ring, squeeze…), well even worse with pineapple. It is clear to us that if it is very green it will not be at the time of consumption and if it is too soft and yellow, neither will it. In reality, we tend to be left in the hands of the fruit seller, which is not bad (fruit is better in the fruit shop and not in the supermarket).
We lack information to choose a pineapple in perfect consumer conditions. That, information, is what Rubén García, @rvbengarcia, has on Instagram. On his account, which has 1.3 million followers, he explained to us what to do to choose a good pineapple.
García says that he was in Costa Rica and that there was the owner of a pineapple plantation who told him the secrets to choose a good specimen.
Three tricks to get it right with pineapple
At first we can have an idea without even touching the pineapple but only its leaves. Without picking the fruit, you have to pull up one of the leaves. If it comes out easily, almost on its own, the pineapple is ready; If it resists, it means that that pineapple still has a few days left.
Another trick bears some resemblance to what we do when tasting a melon. In this case we will press the pineapple’s ass with our finger. It will be ripe and ready for consumption if it is flexible: if the finger sinks in a little and comes back. If it does not give way, it will be a sign that it is hard and still green.
Rubén García points out a third trick: the smell of pineapple. You have to use your nose and smell it. If we notice a sweet aroma, it means that the fruit is at its optimal time of consumption.
Finally, a trick to preserve pineapple at home. We will always keep it upside down. It has its explanation. Since the sugar in this fruit accumulates in its lower part, by turning it we are distributing it and thus balancing its sweetness.
