It looks like the long-awaited remake of System Shock will finally be released on Steam in March 2023.
While not formally confirmed by developer Nightdive Studios, Steam has updated the game’s store listing to reveal a release date in March 2023, and pre-orders are now open.
The proximity of the release was also shared by the insider Wario64, but some commentators wondered if it was a real and concrete release date or just a placeholder.
Described by the developers as “a true remake of the groundbreaking and original 1994 title”, System Shock “will combine cult gameplay with all-new HD graphics, updated controls, a revamped interface, and all-new sound and music,” included the original voice actor of AI HODAN, “one of the most iconic villains in video games”.
What about the third installment of the series? Nightdive Studios has confirmed that the fate of the third installation of the highly anticipated System Shock series is in the hands of Tencent.
System Shock 3 was originally announced in 2015, when Warren Spector was unveiled as a creative consultant. The project collapsed in 2018 after publisher Starbreeze found himself in financial difficulties. Spector’s studio, OtherSide, split from Starbreeze and said he would continue to work on the project on his own, but reports of development issues and staff departures surfaced in 2020. Soon after, OtherSide announced that the Chinese conglomerate Tencent he would “carry on the System Shock franchise”.
In addition, a television adaptation of the System Shock universe, written by Mortal Kombat screenwriter Greg Russo, is also scheduled.
