Blogger Sergei Tijanosvski is sentenced to 18 years in prison for organizing riots and acts of violence and disobedience against the authorities
The Supreme Court of Belarus confirmed on Wednesday the sentence of 18 years in prison for the blogger Sergei Tijanosvski, husband of the current opposition leader Svetlana Tijanosvkaya, and several defendants on riot charges. The court, which has published the results of the consideration of the appeal through its official Telegram channel, ratifies the verdict of the Gomel Regional Court of December 14, 2021.
The judge considered it proven that the blogger and his allies organized riots and acts of violence and disobedience against the authorities. The defendants are guilty of violating four articles of the Criminal Code, according to the initial trial that took place in the closed-regime pre-trial detention center in Gomel, a city in southeastern Belarus.
Tijanosvki was scheduled to stand in the August 2020 elections, to which, after his arrest, his wife ended up running. Tijanovskaya, Charlemagne Prize 2022, was the most voted opposition candidate, although the electoral commission granted her only 10% of the votes, far from what the opposition claimed.
