The Super League, in which only Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Juventus remain, has gone a step further and has appointed Bernd Reichart (48 years old) CEO of the company to relaunch the project that was presented to the world in 2021. Reichart is an executive from the world of media and sports with an extensive career. In 2003, he worked as Marketing Manager at Sportfive sports rights agency and in 2004 he moved to Antena 3 as Head of Investor Relations. He has also worked for the RTL Group in Germany of which he was appointed CEO in 2019 and between January 2019 and June 2022 he was a member of the Bertelsmann Group Management Committee.
The aim of bringing Reichart on board is to drive the development of a sustainable sporting model for European club competitions that reflects the mutual best long-term interests of the entire football community – from cubes and players to fans and the media. As reported to the Bild newspaper, his role will be to start an open dialogue about the future of football.
“The current situation in European club football is marked by several challenges, which will not resolve themselves. The presidents of Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona and Juventus FC have recently presented their points of view on the problems facing this sport. I think they are asking the right questions and personally I would like to hear many different voices so that the European football community can find the right answers together. The sport we all love will benefit from an honest and open dialogue, without restrictions, about a brighter future through deep reform,” Reichart said in a statement.
This process revolves around legality, under competition law, of UEFA’s current monopoly over European club competitions. Let us remember that UEFA took the Super League project to court and no decision has yet been made on its legality or otherwise. The judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union is expected in 2023.
