Mexico City.- On the night of February 10, a fire affected a crane that was in use in the works of Line 12 of the Collective Transport System Meter (STCM) in the Mexico City (CDMX).
He fire was recorded on Tláhuac avenue, in the San Lorenzo Tezonco neighborhood of the Iztapalapa mayor’s office.
The Heroic Corps of Mexico City firefighters managed to put out the fire, which completely destroyed the hydraulic lifting platform. There were no injuries in the incident.
In reaction to this event, the Secretariat for Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGRPC) decided to preventatively close the surrounding road and evacuate the inhabitants of the area of the Line 12 works.
He fire generated a strong mobilization by the emergency forces and caused the circulation of photos and videos on social networks. Users reacted to this new incident related to the Mexico City Metro with critical comments.
Regarding the works of Line 12, the head of the Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, informed that the progress is significant, since all the necessary pieces have been manufactured and currently 250 reinforcement gaps are being worked on.
Although no reopening date was mentioned, the possibility of reopening the elevated span in parts is being considered.
The underground section of Line 12, which runs from Mixcoac to Atlalilco, is currently in operation. Before reestablishing the service, several improvements were made, such as the strengthening of seven sharp curves, the change of ballast and sleepers, and the improvement of the soil.
These improvements were reviewed by a foreign certification body and are guaranteed to withstand earthquakes and ground movements.
