The storm ‘Herminia’ advances: this Monday will be the strongest day of the storm with warnings in 16 communities

The worst of the storm ‘Herminia’ will arrive this Monday, after the storm hit hard throughout Galicia on Sunday, with flights and trains canceled and winds of more than 160 km/h. ‘Herminia’ will warn 16 communities for wind, waves, rain and snow, with Galicia having the most active warnings, four in total: one red for waves, orange for rain and yellow for snow and wind.

The Ministry of Transport has reported that the storm is mainly affecting airports in the north (Galicia, Asturias, Santander and Bilbao), with 54 cancellations on Sunday. Transport warns that this situation is expected to last several days this week at different points according to the weather forecast.

This Monday will come with snow in some places. A mass of colder polar maritime air will enter during the second half of the day, which will lower the snow level to around 800-1,000 m in the northwest and to 1,200-1,400 m in the Pyrenees, Iberian system and Central system , with significant accumulations being possible, according to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency.

It will rain practically everywhere, although it is unlikely to reach the extreme southeast of the peninsula, where cloudy intervals will predominate. The most intense rain is expected in Galicia, west of the Northern plateau and the Central System, other mountain environments and in the Strait area, and may be accompanied by occasional storms.

As for temperatures, they will tend to increase in most of the country, moderately in the eastern half of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with locally notable rises in the Ebro and Levante, and generally slightly in the rest. Decreases are only expected in Galicia and the western Cantabrian Sea. Weak frosts will continue in the mountain systems of the northern half, moderate in the Pyrenees.

The winds will be moderate from the west and southwest in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. It is expected that they will become strong with very strong gusts in most of the territory, although they will be less likely in the extreme southwest of the peninsula and the northeastern third, with the exception of the Pyrenees where intense gusts are expected. Locally hurricane-force spells are possible in parts of the northern mountains and on the coasts of northern Galicia. In the Canary Islands, moderate trade winds.
