The Speed Camera Decree finally becomes law. Or rather, it should become one in all respects tomorrow, when it will be published in the Official Journal and should come into force immediately. Many define the new measure as a real squeeze, since they will limit the autonomy of the Municipalities in the installation of speed detection devices with an objective proclaimed several times: to increase safety on the roads without “deceiving” motorists with the positioning of speed cameras aimed solely at making money.
The new law on speed cameras
As mentioned, the power of the Municipalities in this sense is reduced: from now on it will be the prefect to decide where speed cameras can be placed. And we’re not just talking about fixed speed cameras: even in the case of mobile devices, coordination with the prefecture will be needed, whereas until now local administrations could instead act autonomously. We were talking about the government’s desire not to use speed cameras simply as an additional tax: for this reason the Municipalities they will now have to demonstrate that on the stretch of road where they want to place an electronic eye there is a high accident rate.
Less power to the Municipalities
News also regarding the report preventive of the presence of speed cameras. What do they consist of? The signs must be placed at least one kilometer in advance outside urban centres, between one device and another There must be minimum distances differentiated based on the type of road to avoid series of fines, and in urban centers the distance between the signal and the speed camera must be at least 200 meters on main roads and 75 on others.
Maximum limit 50 km/h
Speaking of urban centers, it was decided that below 50 km/h speed cameras will not be able to intervene. “The speed detected by the speed cameras will be parameterised to that envisaged by the code for each type of road, i.e. 50 kilometers per hour in urban centres, while on extra-urban roads the devices can only be used to reduce the speed by no more than 20 km/h compared to the ordinary limit”, explained the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Matteo Salvini. As underlined by Repubblica this morning on newsstands, the new text gives 12 months to the mayors to adapt the speed cameras to the new rules, after which they will be deinstalled until they comply with the provisions of the decree.
