A replica of the ship Victoria, the first ship to sail around the world in the 16th century between 1519 and 1522, can be visited in the port until this coming Sunday. This reproduction, built in 1994, has also traveled the planet but “we passed through the Panama Canal, while Magellan and Elcano did so going down to the end of Latin America,” explains Sergio Rodríguez, in charge of welcoming visitors on board. of the ship.
He assures that during their stay in Cartagena they have received “a lot of interest, a lot of curiosity and a lot of pleasure” from the public. A positive response from the public that was evident in the surprised faces of the visitors when they discovered the small size of the spaces in which the crew lived.
This is the case of Juan Carlos Caballero who came accompanied by his family to visit the historic ship. “It’s very good, I had already seen it but I wanted to come with them,” he commented. Something that one of his daughters added: “He is very cool.”
Children are the visitors who most enjoy the boat trip. From Monday to Friday, the majority of visitors who come to the Victoria ship are school students. The schoolchildren walk through every corner of the ship “waiting for a pirate to come out.”
Dani Lluc, who works at the Nao Victoria Foundation’s gift product sales point installed next to the ship, details that the days with the most visits are the weekends when “it is full.” However, he blamed less activity on weekdays, “although many schools come, it is somewhat weaker.” During LA VERDAD’s visit to the ship, the trickle of visitors was constant, mostly foreigners.

The visit to the Victoria ship offers a complete vision of the navigation techniques of the time and the daily life of the crew, which demonstrated that the world was round, challenging the limits of human knowledge at that time.
The winery, the cabins, the two decks and an exhibition of objects are some of the main attractions of the ship, which will remain in Cartagena until next Sunday. The replica was built in 1991. In 2004 to commemorate the first trip around the world between 1519 and 1522, it repeated the journey of Magellan and Elcano. He began his journey around the world in Seville with an average speed of 3.5 knots. Between 2004 and 2006 they sailed more than 26,894 miles, as explained on an interactive screen located in the winery.
