In Russia, only 0.2% of citizens know how to secure their bank card details. This is stated in the study of the Visa payment system, the results of which were received by Izvestia.
The issue was studied by the Ipsos company. The survey involved 1,613 people aged 18 to 65: bank card holders and active users of digital services of credit institutions. The respondents live in cities with a population of 100 thousand people.
It turned out that 90% of the respondents only partially know how to secure the data of their bank cards. Young people under the age of 25 are less aware of this. It is noted that this makes them vulnerable to fraudsters and the use of social engineering techniques.
About 15% of the respondents are ready to provide information about the validity period of a bank card and the phone number to which it is linked in a telephone conversation with a person who introduces himself as a bank employee.
There, however, every second respondent knows that the number of a bank card and the name of its owner should not be disclosed to anyone – 54%.
The most unprotected from fraudulent schemes were those who had not yet encountered cybercriminals.
Talking about ways to protect payment data, 55% of respondents noted that they consider two-factor authorization of payments to be the most effective in this matter. One-time payment confirmation codes, used by 74% of respondents, turned out to be the most common method of protecting payment data. At the same time, one in four trusts one-time codes and considers them effective.
The level of confidence of Russians in biometric methods of information protection is higher. Thus, 42% of respondents use fingerprint recognition. 39% consider this method to be reliable. It should be noted that in St. Petersburg a fingerprint is used by 62% of respondents, which is 10% more than the national average.
Face ID protection is less common – it is used by 12% of respondents. This technology is trusted by 14% of Russians, and among respondents aged 18–34 – 18%. Another 3% use voice technology protection.
It is emphasized that 12% of respondents said that there are no effective ways to protect data.
Thus, about 65% of respondents can potentially become victims of fraudulent sites when paying for purchases on the Internet, because they do not pay attention to the page address and do not know that a safe address begins with https. 73% of respondents pay for purchases on the store’s website, and 45% consider this method to be safe.
Confirming payment for purchases with a one-time code from SMS, 76% of respondents pay attention to the amount of write-off, and 65% of respondents pay attention to the name of an online store.
On November 8, the National Payment Card System (NSPK), the operator of Mir cards, told Izvestia that the system had a new function designed to exchange information about compromised national cards between their issuers and the payment system, as well as between the system participants themselves … The new “Compromised Cards” functionality was created on the basis of the NSPK dispute platform, designed to exchange information both between the participants of the Mir system and between banks and the payment system. The novelty should allow taking the necessary measures to combat fraud.
