Threats of sanctions from London are senseless and useless. This was announced on Friday, February 25, in the Russian Foreign Ministry, commenting on the results of a telephone conversation between the First Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Vladimir Titov and the Minister of State for European Affairs of the British Foreign Office James Cleverley.
It is noted that the telephone conversation took place at the initiative of the British side.
“The constant threats from the British side of more and more sanctions are taken into account by us, but they are meaningless and useless from the point of view of the stated goal – to restrain the development of Russia. This will lead to nothing but another round of escalation, ”the statement says. message.
The Foreign Ministry noted that in recent years, the British authorities have deliberately, under various pretexts, destroyed the foundations of relations with the Russian Federation, carried out purposeful work to curtail ties in almost all areas and escalated tensions in international structures.
The diplomatic department of the Russian Federation also pointed out the unacceptability of “London’s provocative rhetoric aimed at encouraging the Kiev regime to destructive actions and further aggravating the situation.”
A day earlier, the British Foreign Office announced that London would seek the complete destruction of the Russian economy. Prime Minister Boris Johnson added that “the oligarchs in London will have nowhere to hide.” He confirmed the government’s intention to impose sanctions on state-owned Russian banks and its readiness to support Ukrainians.
On the same day, Johnson announced new sanctions against Russia. The country will freeze the assets of all major Russian banks with an immediate freeze on VTB’s assets. He noted that countries should collectively abandon Russian oil and gas, “which for too long have given President Putin leverage over Western politics.”
This is how London reacted on February 24 to the statement of Russian President Vladimir Putin that a special operation would be carried out in the Donbass in order to protect the civilian population.
On February 21, the Russian leader signed decrees recognizing the independence of the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics (LNR and DNR). Also, the President of the Russian Federation and the heads of both republics Leonid Pasechnik and Denis Pushilin signed agreements on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance. The documents were ratified the next day by both the republics themselves and the Russian State Duma.
The situation in Donbass escalated on February 17. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia.
Since 2014, the Kiev authorities have been conducting a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine. At the same time, Kiev blames Moscow for the current situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the conflict.
