During the last year the poverty risk rate in the Community of Madrid has gone from 12.9% to 14.3%, which represents a 10% increase in just twelve months. With this data, the positive uncertainty of the last exercises is cut with a remarkable increase. In the State as a whole, on the contrary, the poverty rate has decreased slightly, from 20.2% to 19.7%, according to the living conditions survey published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
A transverse factor throughout the State is the gender gap as a determinant in the risk of poverty. Women continue to suffer clearly a greater risk of social exclusion, with rates higher than those of men in all indicators. Despite the improvement in these data in recent years, the gap has not been reduced for 2024: almost 2 points of difference between men and women.
Despite this increase in poverty, rent per person in Madrid has grown from 16,817 to 17,275 euros per year, consolidating the region as the second with the highest per capita income of the State, only behind Euskadi. However, this economic growth has not translated into an improvement for the most vulnerable sectors, but has been accompanied by an increase in social inequality.
The material lack rate, which measures the difficulty of households to face essential expenses, has also increased in the Community of Madrid with respect to the latest data. During the last year, the percentage of people suffering from material deficiencies has risen from 22.6% to 23.1%. In addition, the data show that 6.2% of the population cannot afford a meal, chicken or fish at least every two days, compared to 5.7% of the previous year.
Child poverty persists
One of the most alarming data is those that refer to the situation of child poverty in Madrid, which remains at worrying levels. Almost 30% of children in the region are poverty, with great inequalities according to the Residence District. In areas such as Puente de Vallecas, child poverty reaches 45%, while in the retirement district is 9.1%.
At the state level, Madrid concentrates 9% of minors at risk of poverty throughout Spain. Factors such as inflation, insufficient increase in income and job precariousness, especially in migrant homes, aggravate the situation. In families where both parents are foreigners, child poverty amounts to 70%. In addition, the difference between child poverty and that of the rest of the population has increased to 8.7 points, the largest gap recorded to date.
Another fact that confirms the widening of poverty and inequality in the whole community of Madrid is the risk rate of poverty According to the AROPE indicator: It has been 19.4% to about 21%. Therefore, it reaffirms that 1 in 5 Madrid lives in a situation of scarcity risk.
