Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is affecting the whole world and football was not going to be an exception. In addition to the suspension of the Ukrainian league or the measures that FIFA and UEFA have taken against Russian teams and the national team itself, one of the clubs that is suffering the most from the consequences of the conflict is Chelsea: from being European champion less than a year to fear for their survival.
The British government has frozen all the assets of Roman Abramovich, including the blue team, which will not be able to sell tickets at its stadium, products at the official store, renew or transfer players; that is to say, Chelsea cannot carry out activities that report an economic benefit, among other things. Therefore, the equipment cannot be sold since the economic accounts are blocked, and in the event that the operation is finally carried out, the objective of the United Kingdom is that Abramovich does not receive any benefit for it.
Then there is the loss of sponsors. The telecommunications company Three announced in a statement the termination of the contract with the London team: “Following the sanctions recently announced by the government, we ask Chelsea Football Club to temporarily suspend our sponsorship of the club, including the removal of the brand from the stadium. and surrounding areas until further notice. We understand this decision will impact the many fans who passionately follow their team.”
Due to this lack of income, The Times points out that the club could go bankrupt and if the sanctions continue to last over time, it could even disappear, which has raised concern among Chelsea fans and workers.
“The club is allowed to continue with its daily activities, but the banks have no appetite for risk. They have frozen some of the corporate credit cards. It has put a lot more pressure on the club,” a club source told the aforementioned outlet. .
Chelsea is experiencing one of the worst crises in its history and the future looks very dark for the club. At the moment the only thing they can do is continue with their sports activity since they are allowed to continue competing in both the Premier and the Champions League.
