Daylight is essential to ensure that our daytime rhythm works as it should. It is therefore not surprising that the right lighting is a very important factor in school learning, because it has an impact on pupils’ alertness, cognition and stress levels. Starting from these considerations and collecting data from previous research on the subject, the Sintef Institute (the Foundation for Industrial and Technical Research based in Trondheim, Norway) has drawn up a series of guidelines on how school buildings should be designed to make the most of daylight. Well-lit learning spaces can foster education and promote good physical and psychological development among school pupils, underlines Claudia Moscoso, a Sintef researcher.
