On October 23, Album 41 of Astérix and Obélix, entitled ‘Astérix in Lusitania’ is published. In this new installment, the characters will travel to the southwest of the Roman Empire, in a territory known for their history, culture and traditions. With a global roll of 5,000,000 copies And available in 19 languages and dialects, this launch marks the 25th trip of the saga.
The scriptwriter Fabcaro explains the choice of destiny: «First we had to find a place where our friends would never have been. The selection is reduced because they have already traveled a lot. In addition, I wanted a sunny and located at a Mediterranean country. Thus arose Lusitania and Portugala country that I have visited several times ».
To document, the creative team made a trip to Portugal. «In the case of a nearby country, we took the opportunity to work on the land. During the preparation of the book, the editor and I visited Portugal to know the places, the Environment and local specialties», Says the screenwriter.
The cartoonist Didier Conrad was also inspired by that country for the illustration of the album: «I went to Portugal a few years ago and received a photographic report from Fabrice Caro. That provided me with complementary information that I expanded with online research. I’m interested in reproducing landscapes and including cultural references of the country visited ».
The provisional album cover represents a Portuguese calçadaa traditional pavement of Portugal. «It is an artistic and cultural expression. Fabrice and the editor sent me photos of cobbled streets and squares, which facilitated the choice of this reason. For design, I selected the Image of a coda gastronomic symbol of the country, ”explains Conrad.
On the plot, Fabcaro advances: “All I can say is that an old Lusitano slave who crossed in ‘The residence of the gods’ will ask our friends for help.”
Manuel Neves, a doctor in social and historical anthropology of L’École des Hautes études in social sciences explains the historical roots that shared Gauls and Lusitanians: «To begin with, they share enemy: Rome. Both peoples also have a charismatic boss: as Vercingetórix to the Gauls, Viriato led the Lusitanians to a revolt that lasted eight years and entered the annals of the story.
