The fundamental objective is to improve the quality of life of these people, marked by a context of poverty and extreme vulnerability
The Red Cross has assisted in 2021 more than 200 people who come to makeshift settlements in the municipalities of Lorca, Mazarrón, Cieza and Cartagena, thanks to funding from the Ministry of Women, Equality, LGTBI, Families and Social Policy. In addition, the organization has a grant from the Cartagena City Council to develop its work in this municipality.
According to Red Cross sources, the teams of volunteers travel to the settlements to provide coverage for the basic needs of those who reside there and thus prevent their situation from reaching a greater degree of deterioration. The fundamental objective is to improve the quality of life of these people, marked by a context of poverty and extreme vulnerability, and to satisfy at least their basic needs for food and hygiene.
This care program for vulnerable people involves the response of the Red Cross volunteer teams to those people who, due to their lack of economic and social resources, are forced to live in precarious conditions, without electricity or running water and in a situation of extreme vulnerability, mostly men. Currently, this service is developed in Cartagena and Mazarrón.
And it is that, as reported by the Red Cross, “these are people who are going through a very difficult situation and carry heartbreaking life stories related to their isolation from their family environment, lack of minimal resources and deplorable living conditions.”
The actions carried out by the volunteer teams include the delivery of aid in the form of food, clothing, butane bottles, hygiene products and drinking water, among others. In addition, other services are offered such as follow-up to the beneficiaries, who are also provided with emotional support to cope with their situation.
In the same way, numerous workshops on different topics are carried out aimed at alleviating the needs that they may have in their environment, as well as transfers and accompaniment to health centers and mediation is offered with community or municipal resources, as well as with public and private entities.
Likewise, this year an important informative and awareness-raising work has been carried out to promote the vaccination of this group against the coronavirus, also making transfers and accompaniment of these people to the points authorized by the Ministry of Health to inoculate themselves.
